What Would You Tell a High Schooler Today?

At school, I spent my very first and last days in the headmaster’s office. Today I bid my two teenagers good luck on their first day of school this year, a daughter in Grade 9 and a son to Grade 12,

Today I bid my two teenagers good luck on their first day of school this year, a daughter in Grade 9 and a son to Grade 12,

I was not sure I was best placed to be offering advice unless it was to stay out of trouble!

These are two critical points of high school ;

Grade 9

  • a new way of working and learning
  • larger school population – wider social circles
  • more distractions
  • greater opportunities

Grade 12

  • the final year
  • pressures of graduating
  • deciding whats next
  • second guessing your choices
  • continued distractions

We can debate the merits of the current school systems and forms of education in preparing next generations for the workforce and world of work that we cannot even guess will look like in their 20’s let alone their 30’s or 40’s.

And which decade will end up being the best years of their lives?

My Dad spent 40+ years working, 2 with his first employer and the rest with his second. He always said I would look back and reflect that school was the best days of my life.

I would disagree.

Knowing what you know now, what would be your advice to a Grade 9, 12 or any high schooler for that matter?
