Probably one of the most recognised political personal leadership brands, Margaret Thatcher, passed away recently. I grew up in the UK at the time she rose to power and changed the perception of Britain both domestically and internationally.
Not universally loved for sure, she may not have been everyone’s favourite person, but she certainly lived up to the key aspects of a strong personal brand;
- Clarity – even though originally she never expected to see a female Prime minister in the UK once she made it to the position she was very clear about what she stood for and how far she would go. ”I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.”
- Consistency – viewed by many as inflexible and expected by some to finally change, she consistently communicated her position and delivered on it time and again. “My policies are based not on some economics theory, but on things I and millions like me were brought up with: an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay, live within your means, put by a nest egg for a rainy day, pay your bills on time, support the police.”
- Constancy – even in the face of strong union opposition and almost being assassinated by the IRA domestically and internationally on the one hand defending the Falklands on the other brokering detente with Russia, she was always there delivering her message and position. She was even rumoured to only need 4 hours sleep pr night. “To those waiting with bated breath for that favourite media catchphrase, the U-turn, I have only one thing to say: You turn if you want to. The lady’s not for turning.”
Question: Which political leadership brand is so memorable for you and why?
