Self Imposed Deadline? They Only Work If You do the Work

The deadline has been looming.

But because it is 100% my date it’s been easy to move the goalposts.

Excuses can come really easily when you have self-imposed parameters.

Sometimes, moving the finish line slightly can relieve pressure without sacrificing quality. Think of it as refining your timeline to suit your pace and workload, not as giving up on the goal.

So tomorrow is launch day.

Self-imposed deadlines can lead to perfectionism, which might make it harder to get started. Remind yourself that completing the task, even if it’s not flawless, is valuable. This mindset can take the pressure off and help you focus on making consistent progress, which often leads to meeting the deadline.

If a deadline feels overwhelming, try breaking it down into smaller tasks with mini-deadlines. Each completed step gives a sense of accomplishment and momentum, making the larger goal feel more manageable.

For instance, if writing a newsletter (hint hint!) feels daunting, set smaller goals for each section or research component.

But at the end of the day, as Seth Godin would say, you finally have to ship it.

Check back tomorrow to find out what ships.
